Her eyes widened, but her expression was barely held up before falling back into sleepy sorrow. She shivered at the feeling of the foreign light spreading through her head.
"I’m dreaming… aren’t I." Her breath caught as she reached up a shaking hand to the vision. "Then the ash will come… it always does. And the dark…"

"No, you aren’t dreaming Luci. I made it, there’s no ash. No dark. Never again. I’m never going to let you be in the dark ever again. See, no dark." He wouldn’t let the vision change, but he shifted her some and turned her to face him, laying against his chest. He smiled softly, though he was deeply worried.

"Lets talk about something, eh? Something nice. Rainbows, butterflies? What is something nice and happy? Lets not be scared, lets be happy and safe and comfortable okay?"

She looked at him for a long moment. She wanted to say something, something important, but she couldn’t.

"Stars." She said finally. "Tell me… about stars."

Feeling. What did she feel?

She opened her eyes again slightly, the sight of Qwerty sitting appearing before her. Had she fallen asleep for a moment? Were they not just outside?

"I feel…" Her eyes closed, and her light dimmed a little more. "… fear."

She… He was at her side immediately, sliding her halfway into his lap and just wrapping his arms around her. He tucked her head gently under his chin, rocking her softly. “Shh… Don’t be afraid, Luci. Don’t be afraid… I’m right here and nothing will ever touch you again. You’re safe. You’re home and safe. Everything is going to be alright.” Maybe fearling possession? Would he need to try and get a sample of the antidote from Seirlran? She wasn’t showing any other signs… unless it was poisoning rather than possession. Too many variables and not enough information.

Qwerty was warm, and his words kind, but the fear was still there. It lingered in her chest, like water where it shouldn’t be.

Home and safe. This was home? “I miss Pompeii.” She murmured. “And Papa…” Everything was buried in the ash.

He couldn’t do anything about that. It hurt but he couldn’t. Well… With a wave of his hand he conjured a representation of Pompeii around them, hoping the comfort of such a sight would help her calm down.

Qwerty knew he couldn’t ease sorrows instantly with his light like his good friend Nightlight, but he hoped the light would ease whatever damage was in her system. He was not going to leave her side until she was healed. He gently kissed her hair, wincing as the light singed just below his skin. As unnatural as this body was for him, trying to do such a thing was definitely uncomfortable but worth putting up with for Luciana. “You’re safe, darling. I’ll make everything right again.”

Her eyes widened, but her expression was barely held up before falling back into sleepy sorrow. She shivered at the feeling of the foreign light spreading through her head.

Her eyes stayed half lidded, Luciana finding it difficult to focus on Qwerty’s face. It felt almost like a dream, though the idea frightened her greatly.

"I… dunno… can’t feel it anymore." She murmured, turning her head to press against Qwerty’s chest. He looked so different in his human form. Did he look like this before? Her head felt fuzzy so she closed her eyes.

"…’m sorry…"

He gently settled her onto a bed, pain crossing his face at her words. His leg shook as he sat down in a chair next to her, a nervous tick that showed just how out of control he felt. He needed to keep his cool but he honestly had no idea what to do. It scared him, not knowing. Surely Seirlran or the Tsar would have some idea but both were out of touch as far as he knew.

He was on his own.

"Ok. Ok…" He let out a breath. He was going to have to do as much as he could without help. "I need you to focus as much as you can, Luci. Try and describe what you remember and what you feel."

Feeling. What did she feel?

Luciana hovered in the state just before sleep, unable and unwilling to open her eyes. Was this being strong? Or was she really that light?

Her feet were caked in dirt and mud, the hem of her dress frayed from running and walking. Everything about her had dimmed and become gray, and new scrapes and cuts crossed over year old scars left from the bowels of Eclipse.

She felt like a rag doll as he head rested against the person’s chest. There was breathing, and there was a heart beat. Slowly she opened her eyes, and the briefest of smiles came over her face.

"Qwerty…" Her voice was cracked and raspy, but it held joy.

Tears stained his cheeks shamelessly as he clutched her tightly but gently, nuzzling his cheek against her hair.

"I’ve got you darling. I’ve got you, and I promise I will never let go. I’ll make everything alright again." He swore softly to her, putting his heart and soul into the statement. He couldn’t believe she was here… couldn’t believe that she was in the state she was in. How could this have been allowed to come to pass? Was it his fault? That Luciana had been forgotten and allowed to suffer alone, the last time he had seen her was…

He didn’t want to think about what she had been through. He just wanted to erase all of the scars. Make her smile again. He owed her that much.

With all the tenderness he could muster in an awkward human form, he lifted her with him as he stood and he slowly made his way back to Big Root. He did his best not to trip and jostle her as the trees became thicker. “Where does it hurt worst?” He needed to make a plan for treatment. He had to get her to the strongest she could manage before they tackled the energy crisis she seemed to be having.

Her eyes stayed half lidded, Luciana finding it difficult to focus on Qwerty’s face. It felt almost like a dream, though the idea frightened her greatly.

Why hadn’t they finished her off?

Why? With so little light to spare she would have been a quick meal.

She could barely move, and her tears had started to dry.

"… my father…"  "…and now the star runs through our veins…" "…so long as it lives, we do, but we must…"

"Please watch over my daughter…!"

Where did that star reside?

What magic held her to it? Was it still there?

In the darkness she thought of the great city of Pompeii. Her home. Where her family lie under the ashes.

She wished to join them, in the quiet dark of the ash.

I’m almost there… if I close my eyes…

"Qwerty! The trees speak of an intruder in the forest. A golden woman. Close to death."

His head jerked at the Spirit’s words, staring at her through the window before nodding and bolting for the door to come help her. With the strength of her touch, she would not be able to bring this golden woman to them for aid.

The spell to make his appearance human was a swift one and he had already conjured clothes, there was no need to scar the minds of the children simply because he was in a rush after all!

The quirky Librarian followed the Spirit’s lead through the trees, far out from the normal boundaries of Santoff Claussen. Why would she have ventured this far? When they came upon the fallen body, he hardly cared why anymore.

"Luci… Oh no."

Gently he gathered the young star-girl into his arms and brushed her hair back, “Luciana? Wake up darling… please wake up.”

A shrill scream rings out from the shadows, then nothing. Darkness and silence.

quirkylittlebookworm:

"LUCIANA!"

He had to find someone, something who knew stars better than he did. Oh god… oh god, oh god, oh god, ohgod ohgodohgodohgod…

"I wish... I wish I was with you..." She stops, and you can hear her breathing become frantic. "No... no please... not again...!"

quirkylittlebookworm:

"NO!"

"LUCI! Luci what’s happening? What’s going on? Luci please stay with me!" He searched more frantically, wishing someone was here to tell him that panicking wouldn’t solve anything. Telling himself didn’t seem to work.

She's crying through her words, you can hear it. "I should have stayed... but I was scared... It's so cold Qwerty... I'm such a fool, I'm so sorry... I'm so scared"

quirkylittlebookworm:

"No Luci no… You’ve nothing to apologize for, darling. Please, if there is anything that can help me find you… please tell me. Anything at all! If not then just hold on while I try to track you down." He turned and scrambled for Ombric’s office, turning desperately through pages. "There has to be one bloody spell in here that can figure this out."

A quiet, familiar voice echos through the shadows. It echos with a sound most painful, one of a small, dying star. Luciana. "Qwerty... I'm so cold... it's so dark... "

quirkylittlebookworm:

"LUCI!"

Instantly he turned, going white as he frantically looked around. Calm. Breathe. Keep your damn head! “Luci, where are you? Luci please I want to help, can you tell me anything? Don’t go… just don’t go. Keep talking.”

Another night. Just have to make it through till morning.

Till morning…

Luciana stumbled on her robes, the roots catching her and sending her tumbling into the dirt. She cried out, but no one was around to hear her. She trembled as she pushed herself up, sitting where she fell. She could feel the tears falling down her face, and she wiped them away.

She wanted to sleep but nightmares kept her awake.

She wanted to rest but the dark compelled her to move, to run.

She wanted to fly but she had no strength. No light.

Her scars ached and her ears rang. She tried to get up but fell forward again. She didn’t bother getting up that time, the star just lay there, staring at her soil covered hand. If there was a glow, she couldn’t tell. All she could think about was her family, the darkness and the ash…

Papa… papa I’m scared…”

It was rare that the Cailleach sent him after specific souls. Not unheard of mind you, she liked getting new kinds of souls, but it was hardly common that she found one she didn’t already have, or that she didn’t have many of. So these little hunting trips were a once in a blue break from monotony.

There wasn’t another life sign -not one that wasn’t an animal, anyway- around where he’d been dropped for a good bit, so there was really no doubt that the one he was heading after was this one, switching his vision over to a more natural one being the dominant, he slid off of Spook, holding onto her bridle and as they head over to the girl.

"No need to be scared, dear… I hear its actually quite peaceful on the other side." Well, if she was a soul the Cailleach personally wanted she certainly wasn’t going to be mistreated.

Luciana’s head snapped up, her eyes wide. A being… on a horse? No… this was… they felt strange to her. As they approached she managed to get up to her knees.

She could feel her body tremble… out of exhaustion… no it was fear. Fear of his eyes. They were black but burned in the middle. Eyes shouldn’t look like that. She had to get away, she had to get away fast.

"Other… side…?" She breathed out, her mind making the connection slowly, but once it did, she ran.
